Who holds the world records for caravans and motorhomes?

Ever wondered who holds the record for the fastest motorhome? Did you know that the smallest caravan in the world is also considered to be a bicycle? Here are some of the current world record holders in the caravan and motorhome category.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s a motorhome! In August 2012, Goldschmitt Techmobil AG (Norbert Brenner, Mike Reuer and Dieter Schmitt) smashed the world record for the fastest motorhome by achieving a measured top speed of 222 km/h in a Mercedes-Benz Viano ‘Jules Verne’ model Westfalia RV. Equipped with a Mercedes 2.2 litre 163 hp diesel engine and a 6-speed manual transmission, the Goldschmitt team decided to make slight modifications to the chassis and engine and keep the original interior intact rather than gutting it to reduce the weight.

Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, affectionately known as The Rainbow Sheikh, built a caravan in 1990 which holds the Guinness record for the World’s Largest Caravan. The monstrous unit is 20 m long, 12m wide, 12m high and weighs in at a staggering 122 tonnes. Nicknamed ‘Al Houdaj’, the caravan includes eight bedrooms (all with en-suite bathrooms), four car garages and a 24,000 litre water storage unit! The Sheikh prefers to show it off rather than use it and is on display at the Emirates National Auto Museum. Let’s just say, this caravan is certainly fit for a king.

Great Britain’s Andy Saunders is no stranger to designing and building custom cars. And in 2013, Saunders decided to try his luck with a caravan. Two weeks and almost ($AUD) 1700 later, the so-called ‘Cramper Van’, was born. This tiny home is only 4 foot by 4 foot in size yet it somehow manages to accommodate four seats, a stove, a sink, a table and a bed. However, unlike most caravans, this one is completely pedal powered and is considered by some to actually be a bicycle.

Swiss couple Emil and Liliana Schmid are possibly the most travelled couple in the world. Holding the Guinness World Record for the Longest Driven Journey, the couple have been on the road in their 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser for the last 26 years. In this time they have covered a distance of over 640,000 kms and visited over 168 countries!

Jan Pollnow from Cologne, Germany, has a very interesting world record to his name. Pollnow currently holds the record for the most caravans towed by one car: 16 caravans using a Toyota Auris! Using a factory as the setting, Pollnow pulled the 16 caravans, weighing 1100kgs each, over 100 metres.

Australian Warrick Brant is one of the world’s strongest men. Weighing in at 150kg and with biceps 23 inches in size, Brant has made a living of carrying and moving objects that most of us wouldn’t even dream of doing. On January 23, 2010, in Queensland, Brant broke the record for the fastest caravan pull over 50 m (164 ft) in 13.59 see. The caravan itself weighed in at 735 kilograms!
