Try to travel alone or – if you are married – with your spouse. It will be harder work, no one will be there taking care of you, but only in this way can you truly leave your own country behind. Traveling with a group is a way of being in a foreign country while speaking your mother tongue, doing whatever the leader of the flock tells you to do, and taking more interest in group gossip than in the place you are visiting.
Very good advice and very true! I went with my husband with a group in Greece and it was the worst a vacation ever! Since then, I totally refuse the group idea.
Going back to planning your trip, it is very easy nowadays to plan your trip online! Plus, if you are picky as I am regarding the hotels (room, bath, location), making it by yourself keeps you way better informed than a travel agent would do! And first trip which I organized totally online was to India (7 days trip with car hire in 5 cities, including Varanasi) combined with Maldives. Flights were booked online as well! And no surprise with any of my online hotel and flight information!
I’ll second that on travelling alone. It’s nice being able to set your own pace and agenda rather than being tied to some random schedule.
